Shreyas Iyer has been appointed India’s new T20I captain for the upcoming series against Ireland and England, as well as the 2026 Asian Games, the Ajit Agarkar-led BCCI selection committee announced on Saturday. Tilak Varma has been named vice-captain.

Fifteen-year-old batting sensation Vaibhav Sooryavanshi has also earned a landmark call-up, securing a place in all three senior squads after his impressive performances in IPL 2026.
Shreyas replaces Suryakumar Yadav at the helm of India’s T20I side, with the former captain not featuring in the newly announced T20I squads.

The announcement marks a significant reshaping of India’s white-ball setup as the selectors begin building towards the next T20 World Cup cycle while also rewarding emerging talent.

The announcement came after the Ajit Agarkar-led selection committee met at the BCCI headquarters in Mumbai to finalise multiple squads.

Shreyas’ elevation follows an impressive run of form in domestic and franchise cricket, where he combined consistent batting performances with strong leadership credentials. Tilak Varma, meanwhile, has been rewarded with the vice-captaincy after emerging as one of India’s most dependable young batters in the format.

The squad announcement signals the beginning of a new chapter for India’s T20I side as the selectors continue to build a younger core while maintaining experienced leadership at the top.
